Castello di Reschio is a private Estate of some 1500 hectares on the border of Umbria and Tuscany, in the green heart of central Italy. It is half way between Florence and Rome, located close to Cortona and Perugia and Lake Trasimeno. The Estate lies in a beautiful valley with a splendour of landscape, which has remained unchanged for centuries. The gently rolling hilly landscape is so typical of Umbria and Tuscany, with its white roads lined with Cypress trees, with its olives groves, vineyards and scattered farmhouses, surrounded by extensive Mediterranean oak and chestnut woods.
The Castello, dating back to 1050, is a historical gem brimming with interest and intrigue. Now, after years of careful restoration, it has been transformed into a singularly unique hotel filled with wit, whimsy and effortless style
Within the walls of the castle are two interlinked courtyards – one now encased in glass and starting a new life as the Palm Court. The other is a wonderful grassy lawn circled by impressive mature umbrella pines and cypresses. It is blessed with perfect acoustics and the home to concerts, recitals and pop-up events
A cool respite from the summer heat or a blazing fire in the winter chill; the Palm Court Bar is a place to relax while luggage is whisked to your Castello suite. It is the hub of the hotel, somewhere to linger over an espresso and plan daily excursions or to sip a cocktail and gossip
The rooms and suites contained within these ancient castle walls are imbued with personality and panache, thanks to our organic approach to contemporary design coupled with a discerning nod to the intriguing characters who once called this home.
The castle’s ancient wine cellars, below the Palm Court, are the setting for our otherworldly Bathhouse, a steamy, dreamy retreat. Worn stone steps lead down to a tranquil sanctuary of therapeutic interconnecting spaces, including a haman, sauna and two treatment rooms. Another, spacious, treatment room has space for family or friends of up to four people, which soon will include a changing room, steam shower, two tubs, two treatment tables, a fireplace and cosy chairs to relax in, with the old ice room just a few steps down, now transformed into a comforting, heated cave. The star of the show is the large, ethereal plunge pool, lit by high-up windows allowing atmospheric shafts of sun to slant into the space. Sink into the water and float across, through a vaulted stone arch, to wallow in the circular base of the three-storey tower. Sit on the marble benches in the warm water and gaze up at the soaring tower flooded with natural light from both high above and beneath the water.
The Equestrian Centre, including a stud for Pure Bred Spanish horses (PRE), offers dressage & high school training for horse and rider in the indoor and outdoor manège. Highly experienced multi-lingual instructors & trainers are available for riding instruction at all levels and ponies of all sizes can provide children with their first or on-going riding experience There are also riding trails throughout the estate. Soon to open will be the Equestrian Theatre, where events will take place.
Tennis on two Astroturf courts can be booked with experienced coaches if required. Mountain biking and walking on many of the trails through the estate are popular. One of the lakes can be booked for the day for private use, with picnic lunch delivered, Clay Pigeon Shooting with the game keeper can be arranged. Throughout the year different events take place, some at the creative centre in the Tabaccaia exhibition space and others out and about on the estate and there is an inter-house tennis tournament open to house owners and rental guests.
The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner 7 days per week and uses many items from the estate synergic biodynamic garden and foraged items from the uncontaminated meadows, hedgerows and woods. Free-range chickens provide eggs and meat, bees provide honey and olive oil and wine are also produced on the estate.
A choice from the house menu and wine list can be delivered to the house or even the pool-side. A private chef in house can also be provided for house owners or rental guests.
Our outdoor pool is a thing of natural beauty. Settled in the landscape surrounded by mature trees and fragrant gardens, inviting a casual dip. It feels like wild swimming, as you skim over the ripples to the undulating views beyond with paintbrush cypresses, glimmering olive groves and ancient vineyards. The old Torrino has had a renaissance and its attentive staff cater for your every whim
