In front of the famous hanging houses (casas colgadas) the Parador de Cuenca is the ancient San Pablo Convent of the 16th century. Located on the(gorge) Hoz del Huécar with its craggy walls and lush vegetation, in the outskirts of the city, the access to the convent of the XVI century is through the bridge that takes to the historic centre, a world heritage city with its Cathedral, the Grand Place, an important abstract art museum. And, last but not least, the legendary hanging houses.
The cloiser of the convent and the ancient chapel, now turned into a cute little coffee shop, are integrated with an inside area that combines traditional elements with modern details such as wicker, leather and fabrics.
The rooms are cozy and comfortable, some have beautiful views of the “casas colgadas”, such as the bar and the beautiful dining room furnished with excellent taste.
Amongst the seasonal dishes of the traditional Cuenca cuisine there's the “morteruelo” (a very spicy pie), the pisto con lomo di Orza (a type of stew with pieces of roast pork), traditional desserts of the ancient monastery such as the alajù (a type of gingerbread).
In the surrounding areas there are very bizarre geological formations of the Ciudad Encantada (the “enchanted city” at 35 km), doline Las Torcas de los Palancares (22 km), Ventano del Diabl, the Jùcar gorge, 20 km and the Natural Park of the Cuervo river (82 km). The province of Cuenca offers a wide range of adventure sports such as hang gliding, paragliding, climbing, rafting and caving.
